Slain University of Utah student honored during commencement

A University of Utah student who was fatally shot by a man she briefly dated was honored during the school’s commencement ceremony.

KUTV reports nearly 8,500 graduates on Thursday night participated in the university’s 150th general commencement. Some of them wore pins to remember Lauren McCluskey.

McCluskey, who was killed in October on campus, was scheduled to graduate with a degree in humanities.

Salt Lake City company O.C. Tanner had pins made and donated them to the student-athletes. The company also made special ones for McCluskey’s parents.

McCluskey was a track athlete at the University of Utah.

Since Lauren’s death, her family has been campaigning for heightened campus safety.

The Lauren McCluskey Foundation also aims to identify other practices that can help keep students safe at school.
