Fire destroys 3 Madison County farm buildings

Damages are estimated at $75,000 after three farm buildings were destroyed by wildfire Monday.

The Madison Fire Department said a tree and vinyl fence were reported on fire at 1059 E. 10000 South in Archer at 2:06 pm

A large willow tree was part of a weekend weed burning over the weekend. It apparently smoldered until Monday, when the tree caught fire and a burning branch dropped onto adjacent property. The three buildings were on that property.

The buildings included a milking barn, a maintenance shop, and a storage shed.

“This is a good reminder to everyone to burn responsibly and make sure all fire is completely extinguished prior to leaving the area,” said Madison Fire Chief Corey Child.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has closed 10,000 South between 600 East and Snake River Road due to a fire in the area.

Madison Fire Chief Corey Child said the fire apparently flared up at around 2:06 p.m. Monday from the remnants of a weed-burning fire last weekend.

The fire has destroyed three farm buildings. Two were cinder block buildings and another was a wood structure. One of the buildings contained tools and 55-gallon drums of petroleum products that burned in the fire.

The fire burned under power lines. Those lines were shut down for the protection of firefighters. Child said they took a lot of heat from the fire and will have to be inspected before the power is restored.

He estimates firefighters will be on the scene until around 5:30 p.m.

15 firefighters from the Madison and Jefferson Central fire district responded to the fire.
