BYU-Idaho professor shares locally inspired sci-fi thriller novel
A local Brigham Young University-Idaho business professor has published a book that has nothing to do with the study of business.
The book is titled “Creation Abomination.”
It’s a supernatural sci-fi thriller that gets you excited to know there’s a little more to a BYUI professor than just lectures and thesis papers.
Alan Thompson is the author of the novel, and he tells us how his book relates to the people in Eastern Idaho.
“I actually wanted to start writing even before I became a BYUI professor. I originally had the book idea back in 1995 but didn’t do anything with it for 15 years. I started writing in 2010 because I really wanted to get it done. It’s been a passion of mine, to tell a story that I thought was really cool,” said Thompson.
What originally sparked Thompson’s inspiration to start writing was Michael Crichton’s book, “Jurassic Park,” but he also says part of his inspiration came from right here locally.
Thompson said: “As I am working on my book, I have been predominately inspired by a lot of the people that live here. Local readers will ask questions about the next book. A lot of them have given me insightful ideas and have taken an interest in the characters. They have given me thoughts on how things can go, and I use that additional information to consider while writing.”
Thompson’s book is fictional but reflects on current moral dilemmas we may face today.
He believes his book would be an exciting read for people here locally and broadly.
Thompson said: “‘Creation Abomination’ brings up some pretty topical items that everybody is being faced with right now having to do with cloning and whether or not cloning is the right thing to do. How far are you willing to push the envelope? How far is going too far?”
It took Thompson six years to complete his book, and he is proud to be considered an east Idaho novelist.
Thompson said: “To be an author here in Eastern Idaho, it feels really awesome. Eastern Idaho, it’s not like a mecca in terms of New York City or San Francisco where you have a lot of entertainment or well-known people. I love being an author here for a lot of reasons. One, it’s quiet, and I love the small-town feel here in Rexburg. It feels great being able to get my book out starting here.”
“Creation Abomination” will be coming out as an audiobook on Audible and iTunes.
It is expected to be released in about four to six weeks. The book is narrated by two theater students from BYU-Idaho.
Thompson is currently working on the second edition of his next book.
