Valentine’s Day rush for local businesses

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - Wednesday is Valentine’s Day and a lot of people wait (or forget) to buy presents for their loved ones until the day of.

How busy does a florist get around Valentine’s Day?

“Probably three or four times busier than a normal day, at least,” Staker Floral owner Betsy Stevens said.

It’s no surprise red roses are the most popular flower for the holiday. Stevens says Staker Floral also adds pinks, whites, hydrangeas, lilies and other flowers to make beautiful arrangements to give to loved ones.

There are several steps before the flowers can be delivered to customers. Some of them are shipped all the way from Hawaii and South America. Once the flowers are gathered, they can be arranged.

Chocolates and other desserts are practically synonymous with Valentine’s Day. How do dessert shops prepare for the Valentine’s Day rush?

Love at First Bite owner Mike Richards said he and his employees are up as early as 4:00 a.m. to dip strawberries—their most popular item during Valentine’s Day.

“We have mini and…large cupcakes,” he said. “And people usually get those in the dozens to take to a loved one.”

So what makes all the hustle and bustle on Valentine’s Day worth it for these businesses?

“My favorite part…is delivering,” Stevens said. “Helping the customers when they come in and making sure they get what they want for their sweetheart on Valentine's Day.”

“We’ve gained a lot of friendships over the years,” Richards said. “It’s just nice to participate with [customers] and be able to support them…and a holiday where they can share how much they appreciate their loved ones.”
