How to drive safely during the winter

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - The winter season in Idaho can be ruthless. Traveling for the holidays can be especially dangerous.

Mentor Motors in Idaho Falls owner Cody Rhead said there are a lot of things we can do to make sure our vehicles are reliable while driving in the winter.

“Being able to see out of your windshield is of the utmost importance,” Rhead said. “One of the biggest factors with that is to verify that you have windshield washer fluid inside your tank.”

Rhead said since frosting over is a big issue, drivers need to check their coolant levels and make sure their vehicles’ coolant does not freeze.

Tire pressure is also an important factor. Rhead said it has a “huge influence on the traction that the tires are actually able to collect while they’re driving down the road.”

Rhead’s final tip is to drive slowly.

“Slow wins the race,” he said. “When you have really slick and unpredictable driving conditions.”
