Wyoming Man Who Died In Bear Lake Identified

Authorities are identifying a 36-year-old man from Evanston, Wyo., who died after he tried to retrieve an untethered boat during an outing at Bear Lake.

The Rich County sheriff’s office says Todd D. Smith was camping in the Rainbow Cove area south of the Utah-Idaho border when he went into the water Saturday night to catch a boat that was drifting away.

Deputies say they got a 911 call around 10:45 p.m., about 20 minutes after the man went into the water.

The man’s body was spotted around 8 a.m. Sunday. A dive team recovered it.

KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reports this is the second drowning at Bear Lake in the past two months. A 12-year-old Boy Scout drowned there in July after a SCUBA diving accident.
