Ammon Council Race Heats Up

With election day nearing, candidates for city races are on the home stretch. One of those is for a spot on Ammon’s City Council.

Keith Morse trekked door to door with his granddaughters down Tie Breaker Drive on Friday afternoon, campaigning for council seat No. 1. He hopes to use his law enforcement and managing background to respond to the people’s concerns.

“I’d also make it so city council is teaming and not steaming,” said Morse. “There needs to be harmony and unity between leaders and that’s not the case today as it ought to be.”

Fellow candidate Brad Christensen has wanted to get into politics for the past 10 years. Two years ago, 14 votes separated him from a seat.

“By my count, I have 16 or 17 more friends now, so I should do alright,” said Christensen.

The investment analyst wants to promote partnership with neighboring Idaho Falls, the county and small businesses. He said fiscal responsibility is the number one priority.

“I think we need to slow spending, reassess where we’re spending, and focus on areas that measurably improve quality of life for citizens,” said Christensen.

Along with Morse and Christensen, attorney Gregory Bean agreed on the biggest issue facing residents: the rising water and sewer rates.

“There are a lot of seniors (and) fixed incomes that really need a break right now and we can take measure by using reserve funds to go in there and help these people,” said Bean.

The nearly lifelong citizen wants to bring the people’s voice. Bean has city council in his blood. His dad Lee Bean is finishing off 16 years of service.

“Plus, it’s my dads seat so it’s like, the charm of running for my father’s seat is exciting,” said Bean.

There’s a lot of concern about voter turnout this year because it’s not a presidential or mid-term election. But, as Christensen said, the government that affects us most is the one that’s closest to us.

Election Day is Nov. 8.
