Deadly Drugs Stolen From Animal Shelter

A burglar broke into Pocatello’s animal shelter and what they stole could put peoples lives at risk.

Workers at the shelter noticed the break-in Friday.

“When they came in they noticed some of the drug bottles were scattered on the floor. And at first they thought that maybe a cat was loose in the shelter or something,? Animal Shelter assistant manager Danielle Garcia said.

More like a cat burglar, someone had broken in and ripped a safe right out of an office wall.

“So all of the drugs that were in the safe, which is the euthanasia medicine, was taken. Unfortunately that is a very, very dangerous medicine,? Garcia said.

Those drugs are used to end the lives of old and seriously injured animals.

If whoever stole the drugs mistakes them for pain pills and tries to pop a few, or tries to sell them to another person, someone could die.

“It is definitely a lethal drug. It’s a lethal drug, and as far as street value or people using it on the street it’s not anything I’ve ever heard of. It’s used for one purpose, and it’s definitely something you don’t want to play around with,? Garcia said.

A metal door at the back of the shelter has been dented inward, evidence of where the thief broke in.

Police are dusting for fingerprints around the door, and in other parts of the shelter, to get a lead on who has the dangerous drugs.

Now,shelter workers say without that medication, they can’t do any euthanasia if an animal is brought in injured and in pain.

“If they bring it here and it needs to be put down we don’t have the capability of doing it. And so animals have to suffer because of that, and that’s a horrible sad thing,? Garcia said.
