Idaho Falls Underpass To Receive $5 Million Renovation

A decaying underpass in Idaho Falls will be receiving a facelift to better accommodate motorists and pedestrians this summer.

City engineers said the D Street underpass will undergo a $5.5 million renovation to address the many safety concerns voiced by the community.

The project will go out to bid in the next two weeks and construction will most likely begin in June. Engineers said the underpass will be closed for a little over a year while the renovations take place.

“It’s going to be an inconvenience to motorists, we know, while this is under construction and having that crossing of the railroad tracks closed for that duration of time,” said Kent Fugal, Idaho Falls city engineer. “The end product will be so much better than what we have today that I think everyone will be glad to see it done.”

Fugal said the small castle next to the underpass will stay there. The railroad tracks will also have to be temporarily relocated during construction.
