Rexburg Curbside Recycling A Success So Far

Curbside recycling is getting closer to becoming a reality for Rexburg residents, thanks to a partnership between the city and BYU-Idaho.

The City of Rexburg completed phase one of their pilot recycling program in two subdivisions to test the sustainability and usage of curbside recycling, and officials say the program had overwhelming support.

The city currently spends nearly $500,000 taking care of their trash and says this program can help limit what goes to the landfill.

“Over the next two months, we’ll be monitoring closely the amount of waste that these homes generate, both recyclables and garbage, that we’re getting from each development,” said John Millar, a coordinator for the Rexburg Public Works Department. “If we get at least 30 percent recyclables then we’ll move forward.”

If it proves to be cost-effective, curbside recycling will be available city-wide by the end of the summer and could potentially reduce garbage waste fees.
