CDC: Utah Has Fewest Students Taught About Condoms
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Utah has the lowest percentage of high school students who are taught about condoms.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports 11 percent of students are taught about the efficacy of condoms, where to get them and the importance of using them consistently and correctly.
The CDC surveyed public secondary schools in 45 states for its report.
Brigham Young University health professor Cougar Hall says state law forbids teachers from advocating for the use of condoms and requires parental approval for sex education classes.
Hall says many teachers try to avoid even saying “condom” during lessons, which partially explains the low percentages.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert vetoed a bill last month that would have only allowed schools to teach abstinence in sex education.
