Tautphaus Park Zoo Animals Create Works Of Art

The Tautphaus Park Zoo is getting in touch with its creative side for a unique new fundraiser.

She’s not an emperor penguin, but anyone who has met Makena the penguin will tell you she’s a princess.

“Makena is incredibly special,” said zoo superintendent Beth Rich. “She’s very popular within the flock, and with the public.”

Makena enjoys a morning swim with her fellow African penguin pals, long walks through the zoo and, of course, painting.

Her secret involves a little help from her handler.

“With our animal ambassadors that’s really critical [that] they’re comfortable with their keepers,” Rich said.

The artwork is all for a good cause.

“The Tautphaus Park Zoological Society is hosting a fundraiser for the zoo and it’s called ?Art by (and for) the Animals?,” Rich explained. “There will be art by the animals. Not just Makena, but our snow leopard has some pieces in as well. So, lots of fun and different paintings by the animals.”

“Art by the Animals” will go on display at the Willowtree Gallery on Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids 18 and under.

All proceeds benefit the Tautphaus Park Zoological Society.

Makena is planning to attend.
