Utah’s Mormon Population Holds Steady Over 3 Years

Utah’s Mormon population has held steady for the past three years following about two decades of slow decline.

About 62.2 percent of Utah residents were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2011, which is up a negligible amount from 62.1 percent in 2009 and 2010.

University of Utah demographer Pam Perlich tells The Salt Lake Tribune the state was becoming less Mormon as people of other religious persuasions moved in for economic opportunities.

But the recession has dried up migration, and most of Utah’s growth is coming from births.

The Tribune tracks the LDS population using membership numbers the church reports to state officials. Those rolls can include people who do not consider themselves Mormon or who have moved.
