IFPD prepares for Independence Day festivities

Idaho Falls’ Independence Day festivities begin Thursday morning, and the Idaho Falls Police Department is prepping for a busy day.

Joelyn Hansen, community projects coordinator, said the IFPD staff increases dramatically, with some officers working 12-hour shifts.

“We also have a number of volunteers from our citizens watch patrol who really play an intricate part in making sure we can provide the services needed,” said Hansen.

Memorial Drive and a stretch from Riverside Drive to Highway 20 will be closed to motorized traffic. Downtown parking will also not be available, so festival-goers are encouraged to bike or walk.

With temperatures likely in the 90s, Hansen said it’s important to stay hydrated. Police and first responders are prepared for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“I say drink a lot of water,” said Hansen. “People say ‘I’ve been drinking a lot,’ but usually it’s something not as good as water or something of that nature.”

Above all, the Idaho Falls Police Department is looking for cooperation and patience.

“No one likes to end their holiday with a trip to the hospital or a trip to jail,” said Hansen.
