Police seek mail box robbers

Pocatello Police are looking for suspects driving a black vehicle who were seen removing mail from mail boxes in the Highland area.

According to police, the suspects are taking the mail, opening it and getting checks that were written to pay bills. They then “wash” the checks, using chemicals to remove the ink, and fill them out again with new information.

Recovered checks have used random names in the “pay-to” section, but the amounts of the check are much higher than the original. The checks have then been cashed at various locations around the city.

If you see anyone other than a letter carrier or home owner removing mail from a post office box, contact the Pocatello Police Department at (208) 234-6100, option #1.

And, if you plan to mail a check, do not leave it in a mail box for a long period of time. Instead, use a Postal Service drop box at multiple locations around the city.
