Madison school district plans $2.5 million levy

The Madison School Board will ask its patrons to approve a $2.5 million, ten year plant facility levy at the polls March 11, 2014. It will require a two thirds majority vote for approval.

It will replace an existing $1.4 million levy that has been used to help pay for building maintenance and several additions and new schools over the past ten years.

District Business Manager Varr Snedaker said the district hopes to stay ahead of growing student populations that have been increasing at a rate of about 100 new students each year.

Snedaker estimates the district will need a new elementary school within the next five years and must also take action to address growth at the junior high level. Options include a new 9th grade center.

The school board also declared the former Burton elementary school surplus property. That will allow the district to put the property up for sale later this year.
