Controversial wolf derby proceeds without incident

A controversial wolf-hunting contest went ahead as planned Saturday despite heavy opposition from pro-wildlife groups.

Despite death threats and increased police presence, registration for the derby took place Friday night in Salmon as scheduled with no reported incidents. Saturday, hunters embarked on the first leg of the two-day hunt.

Organizers say no wolves have been reported shot as of late Saturday. Fifty to 60 hunters signed up for the event.

Managers at the Stagecoach Inn in Salmon said a hunter’s tire was slashed in their parking lot Friday night, but they aren’t sure if this was connected to the derby.

Hunters will meet Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Steel and Ranch in Salmon to claim a cash prize for killing the largest wolf.
