Pocatello nondiscrimination ordinance stays

Pocatello’s nondiscrimination ordinance will remain in place despite a recount Friday.

In May, Pocatello voters chose to keep the ordinance (voting no), which banned discrimination against a person because of sexual orientation or gender identity. It was close, with an 80-vote difference. After the recount it was a 56-vote difference, still in favor of the nondiscrimination ordinance.

Both campaigns, Vote Yes and Fair Pocatello, were in the courthouse represented by legal counsel.

The Vote Yes Pocatello campaign spent $3,000 on the recount.

The secretary of state’s office ran the recount at the Bannock County Courthouse.

Yes Pocatello hadsought the help of attorney Tom Katsilometes of Boise. Fair Pocatello had co-chair and local attorney James Ruchti.
