Focus on arts in school

Alison Noble has been teaching art at Skyline High School for a long time. She has no problem with the emphasis on math and science, but hopes people realize how artistic skills can help in all academic areas.

“It improves attention skills so it will help you in your testing. A-C-T scores improve considerably when you have the arts program,” Noble said.

Mrs. Noble’s students find other benefits about art that helps them in school.

“When you go to an art class you get to clear your mind, and then if you have another core class you’re more focused and relaxed,” Jessiy Jungck said.

“Art is important because it lets your mind flow and be creative,” Shawn Thomas said.

When it comes to the performing arts, Roger Evans has been part of that scene in Idaho Falls his entire life. So he’s putting together a musical benefit concert to be performed at the Civic Auditorium Saturday night, September 13th called Roger’s Review.

“Budgets are getting cut,” Roger Evans said. “Schools are having a hard time providing those kinds of outlets, so any way we can we try to help, and this is a benefit concert to not only perform some really fantastic music, but give some money to the schools so they can have the opportunities I grew up with.”

Artistic Director Brittany Hooper says Evans has brought together some of the best talent Idaho Falls has to offer for the show.

“All local talent, we didn’t go out and get anyone and they are going to blow your mind – they are absolutely amazing,” Brittany Hooper said.

A portion of each ticket sale will go high school arts programs in the District 91 and 93 high schools. Those who buy the tickets can designate which high it goes to and even which performing arts program to credit it to. Performer Mikell Hedricks who just graduated from Hillcrest thinks it’s a great idea.

“With budgets being cut it’s very hard to be in a theater program in school that’s well funded, and that’s what I was blessed with and I think that every kid deserves that opportunity. ” McKell Hedricks said.

Tickets are available at the door, as Chebro music and at www.rogersreview.org.
