Body of E. Idaho man found in Blackfoot Reservoir
Update: On Monday the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office confirmed search and rescue teams found the body of 52-year-old Richard Lee Scherbel of Blackfoot, concluding a six-day search after his family noticed he was missing.
The sheriff’s office said the body was found around 6 p.m. Saturday after a couple of boaters spotted something unusual in the water. Search and rescue crews went out to investigate and found Scherbel’s body about a mile away from where his fishing boat was found mostly submerged.
Sheriff Ric Anderson confirmed his death is being ruled as an accidental drowning.
He said the Scherbel went fishing by himself, and when his family went out to the cabin to meet up with him two days later, they noticed the bow of his boat sticking up out of the water.
That’s when they called the sheriff’s office to come help with the search.
Anderson said the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office dive team along with the Bear Lake County dive team assisted in the search, actively hunting during the week.
Anderson added, Scherber was not wearing his life vest.
