Local mathletes seek funding through votes
The mathletes of southeast Idaho are coming-up short on numbers, but that’s just because they are still looking for funding in order to host this year’s 32nd annual Southeast Idaho Mathletes Competition.
The MATHCOUNTS program helps encourage kids across southeast Idaho to further their math skills, and each year’s competition is funded purely from donations and volunteers.
However, this year Idaho Power is providing a grant opportunity called Powering Tomorrow, where folks can head to the company’s Facebook page and vote for who should be awarded the grant.
MATHCOUNTS southeast Idaho chapter coordinator Krystal Chanda said this is a great opportunity to get some much-needed funding without asking for personal donations.
“It’s a great opportunity for people in southeast Idaho to be able to support MATHCOUNTS and they won’t actually have to open their wallets to go vote for us,” Chanda said.
She said this year the competition has grown to 11 middle schools who have already signed up their teams.
The competition will be held on February 7, and January 31 will be the deadline for teams to register.
