Local school district looking at new safety procedures

The Shelley School District is looking to implement new lockdown procedures to make sure kids are safe in school.

During a meeting Thursday night the board talked about new procedures that a school district in Boise implemented. It is called move, hide and fight. Students and teachers are encouraged to shelter in place. Teachers are also encouraged to fight back.

Superintendent Bryan Jolley said the new procedures would require some training. He also said it wouldn’t cost a substantial amount of money to implement.

“Sandy Hook had outside door buzzers to limit entrance to the school. They had video systems, locked classroom doors, but it didn’t prevent the tragedy. Students were sitting ducks,” Jolley said.

Two board members will be visiting Boise in February to talk to teachers about the new system. The school board also wants public and teacher input before a final decision is made.
