New cameras link man to Idaho Falls Power copper theft

The day after new surveillance equipment was installed at Idaho Falls Power’s main facility, a man was caught on camera stealing copper wire.

The city said Terry L. Waid, 49, was seen on video on Christmas Eve around 11 p.m. stealing $1,100 worth of wire. He also caused $200 in damage to a fence to get into the complex on South Capital, the city said.

“Copper theft is a serious problem in the electric industry. Not only does it cost our customers money and put our system reliability in jeopardy, but it can result in death if energized equipment is the target,” said Jackie Flowers, general manager at Idaho Falls Power.

Waid was arrested on a charge of grand theft and cited for vandalism.

After Waid’s arrest, the city said its investment in new camera equipment has paid off.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or unmarked vehicles at electric facilities.
