The city wants your thoughts: Snow removal survey

While some places are still dealing with heavy snow fall Idaho Falls was able to dodge Tuesday’s storm.

That’s not stopping the city from addressing complaints it received about past snow removal.

The City Council held a public meeting Wednesday, to listen to feedback on the residential snow policy.

The city’s public works director, Chris Fredericksen, said most complaints that came in through social media and questioned the policy concerning driveway snow removal.

“We’re going to come in and clear a 10 foot-wide width. Essentially one bucket width of the loader from the plow, for home access to the street,” Fredericksen said.

A 12 question online survey was produced to gather feed back on what people in the community want and expect from the city’s snow removal policy.

According to Fredericksen, the city’s snow removal fund had $1.1 million to spend on residential snow removal, which occurred twice during the year.

Ninety-seven percent of that budget has been spent on removal thus far.

Back in January and February, the city issued snow proclamations, which ordered people to move their cars off residential streets so snowplows can maneuver safely through narrow streets.

After the February snow proclamation, the city was hit with phone calls and complaints by people, Fredericksen said.

“With the current driveway policy, snow plowing cost the city $200,000 and if people want more it’s going to cost double that,” Fredericksen said.
