Stay observant, lock your doors
Even though summer is on its way this month, during a time of productive activities, and feeling more comfortable with temperatures warming up, Pocatello Police are still urging the importance of locking your doors and windows, eliminating unwanted strangers in the house.
According to Bannock County Court records, Rebecca Sue Ann Carter, 35, was arrested Friday night after unlawfully entering a family’s home. She refused to leave and assaulted police officers when they arrived. Carter is now accused of battery on a police officer, open containment of alcohol and unlawful entry. She is currently being held at the Bannock County Jail.
Police say a small community should never be underestimated for the unexpected. It can happen anywhere in the country, at any time. In this particular case on Friday, no one was seriously injured and Carter’s crimes did not escalate.
Lt. Ian Nelson of Pocatello Police was asked why some people neglect to lock their doors at night, which can entice a crime of opportunity.
“I think that some people like to think they live in a safe community, so that can bring on a false sense of security,” said Lt. Nelson.
Nelson says the summer months sees an increase of home invasions and burglaries.
But even if your doors are locked, crimes of opportunity can even occur regardless. One man from Firth, Jared Johnson, says he has been the victim of a home invasion before.
“It was during the day, all of my doors were locked, and I was away at work. A guy broke into my house and stole some of my belongings. He was thankfully arrested later. But my advice to people is to lock your doors and put something between windows and sliding doors to prevent it from being opened,” said Johnson.
