Impacts vacation rentals have on communties
People are trying to find that home away from home when booking a vacation.
Rental websites where people can find, list and rent vacation homes like AirBnB and VRBO are becoming increasingly popular. But sometimes these vacation rentals can cause problems.
The problems vary from how taxes are collected to neighbors being bothered. Most of it boils down to how these properties are regulated.
“Concerns from the single family neighborhoods there,” Tyler Sinclair, the director of Planning and Building in Jackson, said. “When you’re on vacation you’re probably staying up later or using the hot tub or kind of enjoying yourself all week long, and you know, the family next door and neighbors are on you know a typical routine, like we all arewhen we’re just at home and working.”
Jackson found a way to regulate it. People who want to list their homes on these sites have to have a permit and live in a designated area of town.
Town officials said they didn’t want to ban these types of rentals because they can see the value and need, so they chose to regulate them instead.
