Teacher gets South Fremont High School national grant

South Fremont High School in St. Anthony is one of 16 schools in the nation that received a grant to continue their coding program.

In addition to the grant award, English teacher Bonnie Warne is invited to Washington D.C. in November to meet with U.S. Department of Education Secretary John King.

South Fremont High School recently lost its computer science teacher and Warne saw a need to continue teaching coding.

She applied for a grant that allows the school to pay their teachers to learn how to code and to introduce coding to students through a program sponsored by MIT Scratch.

“I couldn’t believe that we got the grant. This is a national grant. We’re little, tiny Fremont County South Fremont, and we get it? It’s huge for us, because we now have the opportunity to do things that without ASCD we not be able to do. Thank you ASCD,” said Warne.

ASCD stands for Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, that program awarded the school with the grant. Warne will meet with King and the other grant winners to collaborate, share and create networking opportunities.
