Small earthquake rattles Caribou County

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake stuck Sunday afternoon in rural Caribou County.

The University of Utah and the United States Geological Survey report the quake hit just after 1:55 p.m., along the East Gem Valley Fault. The fault line runs along the eastern edge of the Gem Valley.

The epicenter was about 10 miles west-north-west of Soda Springs and about 6 miles east of Bancroft.

Later about 2:40 p.m., there was a smaller magnitude 2.2 quake near Bellevue, Idaho. However, this was on a different fault over 100 miles away from the Caribou quake.
