Wyoming students rank high in science

Wyoming’s fourth- and eighth-grade students continue to score higher than the national average in science.

The Wyoming Department of Education recently released the results from the 2015 National Assessment of Education Progress.

The Sheridan Press reports that Wyoming’s fourth-grade students scored a 161 and eighth-graders scored a 160. The national average for both fourth- and eighth-grade students is 153.

Only two states performed higher in fourth-grade science scores in 2015, and nine states were deemed not reliably different. In eighth grade, four states achieved higher scores than Wyoming, and 13 states were not reliably different.

The NAEP science test is given every four years. It selects a statistical sampling of 4,300 students across the state.

Wyoming is in the process of adopting new science standards.
