What to expect during Thanksgiving travel

According to AAA, 50 million people are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving week; especially since that national average gas price is $2.13 a gallon.

As we grow closer to the Thanksgiving weekend, more and more people from all across the U.S. will take to the roadways to visit family and friends.

Jordan Maxwell traveled 14 hours from California to Idaho Falls to see his family for the Thanksgiving.

“There’s a lot of cars out there but it’s going to be Thanksgiving,” Maxwell said.

He also adds, ” I left early. So make sure you leave early and know your path and map it out. Just be prepared.”

This holiday, travelers want to make sure to stay safe so they can make it to their destinations.

Idaho State Police Chris Weadick is reminding residents that the holidays are much better spent when everyone gets to their final destination safely.

“For the upcoming holiday travel the Idaho State Police is going to be out in full force really promoting traffic safety. Making sure people get from point A to point B,” Weadick said.

Weadicks also said they are teaming up with the Idaho Transportation Department on seat belt safety. “For their Seat Belt Mobilization campaign, we are really encouraging seat belt use and wanting people to eliminate distracted driving.”

Before getting on the road, travelers should first ensure that your vehicle is ready for travel by checking your tires and wiper fluids.

State Farm Agent Chris Dinkelman said are this time people may get stuck in traffic or on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.

“Make sure you have blankets, water and snacks in the back of your trunk. So in case you get stuck for hours you have snacks and warmth,” Dinkelman said.

With families to see, turkey to eat, and places to go, many travelers don’t want to leave anything to chance.
