Idaho participates in free HPV vaccination day

Thursday was the Gem State’s first statewide HPV vaccination day. This was in efforts to prevent cervical cancer.

Clinics took place all over south eastern Idaho. From Bonneville County to Teton County. There were nine different locations where people could get the free vaccination.

It was available to males and females between the ages of 11 to 26. The HPV vaccine is now being recommended like any routine vaccination schedule.

“The strains of HPV that are in the vaccine are responsible for about 90 percent of cancers. So it’s very important,” said Rachel Mugleston, a reproductive health coordinator with Eastern Idaho Public Health.

The guidelines for the vaccine’s dosage have changed. Before the age of 15, you only need two doses. After 15, it’s recommended that you get three doses. This was a call to action to health care providers to raise awareness on the importance of this vaccination.
