Lowe’s partners with charity to build bunk beds for kids
For many kids around the nation, not having a bed to sleep in is a sad reality. One group is trying to change that.
Saturday, the group “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” partnered with Lowe’s in Pocatello to build bunk beds for local kids in need.
SHP partnered with Lowe’s as part of Lowe’s “Heroes” project, which aims to give back to the community. Volunteers and Lowe’s employees built 20 bunk beds.
SHP was started five years ago in a family’s garage as a service project to show their kids how to better appreciate what they have. It has since grown across multiple states. Volunteers can now make about six bunk beds in one hour.
SHP said that doing these building projects is not only good for the kids but also for those who volunteer their time.
“It’s a team building exercise and that’s another great thing about sleep in heavenly peace is not just the fact that we get to help the kids, it’s an opportunity for people to learn a skill to actually work with their hands,” said Heidi Mickelson, CFO of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. “At the beginning of the day we have a huge stack of wood, at the end of the day we have bunk beds. And it’s really great to see that process and it’s really wonderful for people to get involved and work together with their hands.”
There is an application process to see which kids are most in need of the beds. Mickelson said they get at least one application every day, sometimes more. It’s run completely on donations and volunteers.
