Boise boy rescued from Custer County back-country

A 16-year-old Boise boy is safe after a Wednesday night back-country rescue about 28 air miles west of Challis. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said the boy, identified as River Greenfield, fell and injured his knee and ankle while hiking at Mystery Lake. The lake is located about two and a half miles southeast of the Diamond D Ranch in the Loon Creek Basin. Custer County Search and Rescue was activated shortly after 6 p.m., but with darkness coming and weather changing, a 2 Bear Air rescue helicopter from Flathead County, Montana was dispatched to pull the boy to safety. By 10:50 p.m. Greenfield was treated by Challis ambulance service and on his way to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Boise for further treatment.
