Idaho Falls warns of utility billing scam

An Idaho Falls business owner says he received a call from a person claiming to be with the city of Idaho Falls demanding money for unpaid fees. The caller threatened to turn off the business utilities unless he paid. But, Idaho Falls said those calls were not from the city. Idaho Falls does not demand utility payments over the phone. All billing is handled by the city’s Utilities Office and payments are not accepted over the phone. The city said you can recognize a scam if: the caller demands immediate payment the caller wants you to buy a prepaid credit card the caller says payment must be made over the phone the caller cannot offer payment options. And, the city advises; do not provide any personal or financial information over the phone if you did not initiate the call. If you have any doubts or questions, hang up and call the utilities office at 208-612-8280 or 208-612-8144.
