Firefighters expect Rabbit Foot fire growth
The lightning-caused Rabbit Foot fire was estimated at 2,500 acres Monday morning and zero percent contained.
There are about 215 firefighters assigned to the fire, which is burning in grass, brush, and timber in steep terrain on the Salmon-Challis National Forest. They are manning four 20-person crews, 15 engines, 2 dozers, 1 water tender, and 3 helicopters.
Warmer and drier weather is expected to help accelerate fire activity Monday, especially in steep, timbered terrain with very dry undergrowth.
Firefighters are trying to keep the fire north and west of Morgan Creek Summit and southeast of Silver Creek Road. To do that, they are working to establish containment lines using old roads, fire lines and even canals. They are preparing a burn out if weather conditions allow.
Crews are also working to protect structures along Panther, Morgan, Silver, and Alder Creeks. Each structure is being assessed for defensible space, hazardous fuels, and sprinkler systems if the fire should advance towards them.
