Sheriffs want out of drivers license hassles

Idaho’s County Sheriffs were not happy with the latest failure of the state’s driver’s license program. And, they are tired of taking the blame for it.

Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland said the state has been installing new software and upgrading equipment to manage the system for the past 18 months. But, he says county law enforcement is taking blame for the delays and problems its all having on the public.

The Idaho Sheriff’s Association is asking Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter and the legislature to move the responsibility to the Idaho Transportation Department. Rowland said Idaho is only one of two states that require Sheriffs to run the driver’s license service, even though it’s ITD’s responsibility.

Rowland says it is past time the ITD take back the driver’s license system and take the burden off of the Bingham County taxpayer.
