The second annual “Super STEM Girl” conference at ISU
The second annual “Super STEM Girl” conference was held Tuesday in Pocatello.
Eighth-grade girls from Pocatello, Chubbuck, American Falls and Aberdeen were invited to Idaho State University to learn more about STEM fields. Girls got the chance to participate in hands-on experience with STEM-related activities on the college campus.
The conference was sponsored by Center for New Directions and was designed to help young girls discover what their strengths are. It was mainly geared towards helping young girls gain confidence, spark interests in STEM fields, and develop skills to become successful.
10 successful women will speak to the eighth graders at the end of the conference. Many of them will share their story and how they became interested in their perspective fields.
Maria Orozco, a nuclear engineering student at ISU and a keynote speaker for Super STEM Girl Conference says it’s important to get girls interested in these fields at a young age.
“They’re doing it for eighth-grade girls because they’re getting them at a younger age to get involved in STEM fields. I never knew I wanted to be a nuclear engineer when I was in High School. So getting them younger, they open their eyes and get to see different things,” said Orozco.
