Pocatello to host open house discussing Flood Risk Impact

The City of Pocatello Engineering Department is welcoming residents to talk about the potential impacts of flooding in the Gate City and provide feedback on proposed revisions to the community flood map.

On Monday, February 4th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Pocatello City Council Chambers, 911 N. 7th Avenue, there will be an open house showcasing the City’s plans to reduce flood risks. The meeting will also showcase ways to protect your family, home, and business from flood damage. At the informal meeting, residents have the opportunity to learn about and ask questions on the flood mapping process and what the changes may mean for them.

“At the meeting, you can ask about the risk to your property and learn what happens next,” said Maggie Clark, Project Manager. “We will answer questions and share information about the proposed map. Protecting yourself today means preparing your home or workplace now and knowing what to do when a flood is approaching your home or business.”

Preliminary maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency identify the areas that have a one percent chance of flooding in any year. Once new flood maps are adopted, they help dictate flood insurance prices for federally-backed mortgages. Information from the maps also help inform hazard mitigation plans as well as land use and development decisions.

Printed flood maps can be picked up at City of Pocatello Engineering Department, 911 N. 7th Avenue.
