When is a good time to plant
When is the best time to start your garden?
That is a question that is a tricky one in Idaho.
With Farmers Markets open and green houses full of new spring plants , it’s tempting to get that garden started now.
On average the frost free growing season in Idaho doesn’t start until May 22 and ends October 6th.
According to Wendy Swore of Swore Farms, some of the vegetables that can stand colder temperatures can be planted now.
Broccoli, cauliflower, greens, radishes and peas are ok to start right in the garden; however, some things need to wait.
“Your tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, anything that is cold sensative you will want to keep in a little longer. or make sure you have a good covering for them. If your garden is too big and you can’t cover everything you can turn on a sprinkler before it gets too cold and then keep the sprinkler running until all of the ice melts off and then that usually will save them.
Swore also said that they have had a inch of ice on some tomato plants but because they kept the sprinklers running until the ice melted they were fine.
