A ship suspected of carrying toxic waste docks at a port in Albania to have its cargo inspected

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — A ship suspected of carrying a large amount of hazardous waste has been allowed to dock at Albania’s main port, where its cargo was being unloaded for inspection. A watchdog group had alerted Albanian authorities about the waste cargo and they had prevented the Turkish-flagged Moliva XA443A from docking early last week at the port of Durres. After they are unloaded on Friday, the containers are expected to be sent to an agency in Porto Romano for inspection. The prosecutor’s office has asked different institutions to conduct lab tests of the cargo. The hazardous waste is expected to have originated from a steel company in Albania and also illegally smuggled from neighboring Kosovo and Germany.
