ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria has recorded its first death from monkeypox in 2022 while Congo has confirmed nine deaths and 465 cases this year. The chief of the Sankuru health division in Congo said Monday that the persistence of the disease in Congo is due to the consumption of dead monkeys and rodents. Nigeria said the first monkeypox death this year was in a 40-year-old patient “who had underlying co-morbidity and was on immunosuppressive medications.” The Nigerian health agency said 21 cases have been confirmed of the disease, which is endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa.
