Lavaside Fire estimated at 200 acres
FIRTH, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE 8:00 p.m. The Bureau of Land Management reports winds have died down slowing the fire's progress to the south.
The fire is burning between a canal and the Snake River, west of Firth.
The fire is estimated at 200 acres.
UPDATE 6:20 p.m. The Bureau of Land Management reports the Lavaside Fire is approximately 100 acres and growing.
The fire is moving south, being pushed by light winds from the north/northeast.
Firefighters are aggressively engaging the Lavaside Fire with engines and a bulldozer.
It started Wednesday at approximately 4 p.m.
It is 0% contained with no estimated containment.
The BLM said to contact Bingham County Sheriff for evacuation information. There are no closures.
The cause is under investigation.
ORIGINAL: A large fire is burning in the Firth area.
Bingham County Sheriff Craig Roland told us the fire started around 4 p.m. when someone was burning weeds and got out of control.
The Bureau of Land Management says the fire has grown to 100 acres along South Lavaside Road.
We are told the flames are several stories high but burning only vegetation.
It's about four miles west of the town and the smoke is visible from I-15. Light winds are not helping, and a BLM spokesperson says they are surprised to see a wildfire this early in April.
Five different departments are on the scene.
