Police: Teen arrested in fatal stabbing of woman in Murray
MURRAY, Utah (AP) - A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Utah after police accused him of fatally stabbing a woman in an apartment complex parking lot in Murray earlier in the week, authorities said.
The Murray Police Department said officers responded around 6 p.m. Thursday to the apartment complex in a Salt Lake City suburb and found Melissa Wood, 34, stabbed multiple times outside.
Police said the boy, whose name was not released, was booked into juvenile detention. The charges were not disclosed. An investigation is ongoing.
A woman, who identified herself as a friend of Wood, said on Facebook that the woman was killed in front of her apartment while confronting a boy about using racial slurs.
"I was told by neighbors she heard a man using racial slurs to a family of color, she didn't hesitate to go downstairs and confront him and tell him it wasn't okay," Kelsey Robertson said in a post on Facebook.
The Murray Police Department declined to comment on whether detectives believe the confrontation may have been started by use of a racial slur.
"Investigators are aware of the confrontation. They're not going to discuss the details of the confrontation," the department said in a statement.
