It’s National Teen Driver Safety Week – How to keep your teen safe on the roads

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – This year's National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 15-21. During this week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reminds parents to talk to their teens about the rules of the road and the importance of safe driving.

The Idaho Department of Transportation is joining in on spreading the message in a fun way calling on arguably one of the most powerful fanbases; the Swifties, a name for lovers of Taylor Swift.

Before the "Taylor Swift: The Era's Tour" screenings this weekend, Idaho moviegoers will have a chance to watch a quick Swiftie-themed public service announcement reminding teens about safe driving habits. The PSA features friendship bracelets (which have become iconic among the fanbase at concerts) that read, “Drive safe. Be here for all your eras.”

The Office of Highway Safety says teens are 2.5 times more likely to crash than any other age group.

ITD reports that in Idaho, some of the top contributors to teen crashes include speeding, tailgating, lack of attention, distracted driving and impaired driving.

Idaho company, How's My Teen Driver, is sharing their message on their efforts to help keep teens safe on the road getting parents more involved. It is an app-base subscription allowing parents to get real-time notifications on how their teens are driving.

Here's how it works: Parents will receive a bumper sticker to place on the back of their teen's vehicle with information for other drivers to alert parents of the teen's unsafe driving habits. They say this will allow parents to take action and help improve the behavior before it's too late.

They believe their approach will help develop the next generation of drivers and save lives.
