Nicholas crawls into Louisiana from Texas, dumping rain

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Bands of heavy rain have been pummeling parts of the Alabama Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle. It’s the result of moisture pulled up from the Gulf of Mexico by slow-moving Tropical Depression Nicholas. The depression was over southwest Louisiana, moving east-northeast at around 5 mph. But the heaviest rains were far to the east Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service said flash flood watches stretched from coastal Mississippi into northwest Florida. In southeast Louisiana, rain from the depression complicated recovery efforts from Hurricane Ida, which pummeled the state on Aug. 29.
