Police find body of man who died after hiking fall in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities in Utah have said a 24-year-old man has died after a hiking accident in Emery County.

The Emery County sheriff's office launched a search after a friend reported Matthew J. Schnitzer of New York missing last Thursday around 7 a.m., KUTV-TV reported Tuesday. Deputies said a Department of Public Safety helicopter later found the hiker at the bottom of an 80-foot cliff.

Deputies said Schnitzer and a friend had been camping and hiking in a side canyon above Orangeville, Utah. During the hike, the friend left Schnitzer to return to camp while Schnitzer continued hiking.

The friend notified authorities when Schnitzer failed to return to the camp.

Police believe Schnitzer lost his footing on the slope above the cliff and fell off the edge.
