How soon will election results be tallied?

The countdown has begun.

Less than 24 hours until the polls will officially close.

The 2012 campaign trail has proved to be a bumpy ride for all involved and it’s one that many are anxious to put behind them.

How soon will be able to do that?

Poll workers will start the tedious job of counting them as soon as 6 p.m. Tuesday, but it may be a long night getting results calculated.

Monday before elections is normally the calm before the storm, but not this one.

Phones were ringing off the hook at the elections office in Bonneville County.

Election supervisor Penny Manning said everyone wants to know where to vote and how to register.

“It’s considered same-day registration and you can do that at the polls in Idaho, which is really nice,” said Manning.

Local News 8 wanted to know after all those votes are cast just how long it will take for results to trickle in.

Manning said the count begins at 6 p.m., but because our state lies in two different time zones you’ll still have to wait to find out who’s winning.

“The results are not released until after 9 when the polls close in northern Idaho,” said Manning.

Because there are write-in candidates in multiple races this year, including for president, it may take a while to tally each ballot.

“We’re expecting it will be a late night here in our office,” said Manning.

For anyone wondering about those absentee ballots that have been coming in for weeks, they’re in the office stacked and ready to go.

There’s still room for more to come in Tuesday.

“This is their chance to express to the legislatures as well as to the nation what their feelings are. The local issues are every bit as important as the national issues,” said Manning.
