Madison looks inside for Assistant Superintendent, other administrators

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI)-Madison High School Boys Basketball Head Coach Travis Schwab will step down from the post this year to become Assistant Superintendent of Madison School District.

Schwab has 21 years of coaching experience, the last 16 at Madison. 

The school district will post the coaching opening Monday and begin the process to fill the head coaching job.

Schwab issued the following statement Friday:

“It has truly been an honor to be the head basketball coach of Madison High School for the past four years”

Newly installed Madison Superintendent Randy Lords has also acted quickly to assign other new positions in his administration. “One of the constants in education is change, and with these changes that have been made to the administrative team in our district, I look forward to and expect great things from our leadership team. Our leadership team, staff, students and amazing community will continue to make Madison the best school district in the State of Idaho.”

To fill the vacancy in Special Services, current Madison Middle School Principal, Landon Lefevre, has accepted the position and is looking forward to the new opportunity. Lefevre has been with Madison for 14 years, start as a 3rd grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary then getting the bulk of his administrative experience at Burton Elementary for seven years. 

Madison Middle School will now be in the hands of Mr. Kevin Carey, who is currently an assistant principal at Madison Jr. High. Carey got his start in education 18 years ago and found his way to Madison 10 years ago, taking on the position of Principal of South Forth Elementary. He remained at South Fork for five years but has also had administrative rolls at Adams Elementary and Madison Jr. High.

Filling the vacancy of Carey as Madison Jr. High Assistant Principal, will be a long time educator of 23 years, Heather LaRue. LaRue has been with Madison for 11 years and has experience in special services, teaching and coaching.

South Fork Principal, Willy Berry will be moved to a multifaceted position as Assistant Principal at Madison High school as well as Bobcat Fieldhouse Facility Director, and Junior High Athletic Director. Berry has been with Madison for 21 years. He began his career as a Special Education teacher at Madison High School and has since had various positions, with his most recent as principal at South Fork.

To fill the position at South Fork Elementary, the district plans to name  Jarin Draney, current Assistant Principal at Madison Middle School, has accepted the position. While Draney is new to Madison, he is no stranger to education, working 19 years, in the neighboring District, Sugar-Salem. He began his teaching career in Physical Education, moved to 4th grade and spent the remainder of his time at Sugar there.

Joining Mr. Carey at Madison Middle School and filling Draney's position as assistant principal will be Brenda Butikofer. Butikofer is currently Assistant Admin at Burton Elementary. She has been with Madison for 20 years. Seven years teaching and 11 in the Gifted and Talented program.
