Aviation Expo features famous pilots

People are flying high at the 2014 Aviation Expo in Idaho Falls. Workshops, exhibits and live demonstrations are on display.

A famous pilot officially known as the “Spin Doctor” will put on a show for spectators. Rich Stowell has been a pilot and instructor since the 1980’s. He also works with the Federal Aviation Administration to promote safety when flying.

“I have done 33,000 spins toward the ground. In terms of miles, it’s equivalent to spinning down from the International Space Station about 7 times. The best part of flying is the 3-dimensional freedom. In an airplane you can go straight up, straight down or upside down,” said Stowell.

Another famous pilot in the community is 89-year-old Bob Jones who started flying in World War II. He also used to teach people how to fly.

“I met so many nice people and taught so many different people how to fly. It was just a pleasure,” said Jones.

Mike Hart is one of the organizers of the event who said the expo gives pilots a chance to come together.

“This expo is about the economy of aviation in Idaho and all of the issues about aviation in Idaho. It’s a chance for pilots to get together,” said Hart.

The expo will be held Saturday at Aeromark. Stowell will be doing his live demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Doors open at 10 a.m. and tickets are $10.
