Election day reminders

For the second time, the Republican primary ballot in Idaho is off limits to voters who are not registered with the GOP.

Voters will have their choice of the nonpartisan ballot, the Democratic ballot and the Republican ballot:

Anyone can voteon the nonpartisan topics, regardless of party affiliation. Only voters registered as a Republican can vote on the Republican ticket. All voters can vote in the Democratic ballot if they choose to. However, you can only choose one party or the other.

Unaffiliated voters can register for a party at the polls if they have not registered with another party.

One of the most closely watched nonpartisan issues in Pocatello is the referendum for the nondiscrimination ordinance.

Earlier this year, a petition to put the ordinance on the May ballot caused questions and concerns. The nondiscrimination ordinance forbids discrimination against a person based on their sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. It applies to housing, employment and public accommodations.
Some felt the petition was misleading. The referendum on the May 20 ballot works like this:

A yes vote on the referendum means you want the city council to repeal the ordinance. A no vote means you want the ordinance to stay in effect.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. We’ll have live results on Local News 8 at 10.
